September 11, 2022 – Heraklion, Crete, Greece

Visited the ancient Minoan site of Knossos near Heraklion. There was a great palace here about 2000 BC and later. There’s been some restoration. This is the most visited site on Crete for good reason.

Went to the old fort on the sea. It’s called Koules Fortress and it has very stout walls. It was built by the Republic of Venice in the 16th century. Inside are relics from shipwrecks and the view is good from the top.

For the foodies … lunch was seafood stuffed pepper. The restaurant was maybe a little out of the photo way over on the right. The photo was taken earlier from the top of the fort about 300 yards away. There was a view of the old harbor and fort from every table.

In case you’re interested the bill was 15 euros or about $15. It was a restaurant mainly for tourists so it wasn’t the cheapest option around.

A view of the Mediterranean looking northwest. I didn’t see the guy catch anything but it was fun watching him try.

It’s what’s for dinner and breakfast.

Walked about 3/4 of a mile to a market. The clerk said the fish is cod. If it is it’s the smallest cod I’ve ever seen but I’m sure they don’t start life very large.

Also, orzo, butter, instant coffee, cheese from a goat or sheep, water, orange juice, and cookies. Total was 13.85 euros or about $13.85.

You’re not supposed to drink the tap water here. You can in Athens.

May eat outside. The photo of the area with a table goes with this AirBnB.

And, while walking back, stopped and looked at this church. It’s Greek Orthodox, I think.
