Took a ferry from Heraklion, Crete to the island of Santorini about 30 miles north. It took two hours and I had a great front window seat.
I’ve arrived too early to check in but I can sit by the pool and I can take a walk to kill time until the 3 PM check in.
The place where I’m staying is Santorini Camping/Rooms and it has a mini market, small self service restaurant, pool and probably more I haven’t discovered yet. It’s about the cheapest place to stay on this expensive island which is loaded with tourists.
The screenshot of the map shows where the ferry was when I captured the image. Santorini is labeled Thera because that’s its other name.

Here’s why I came to Santorini… the sunsets are probably some of the best in the world. Fira and several other towns sit on the edge of a old volcano’s caldera, the rim at the top.
The west side of the caldera is almost a cliff dropping 750 ft to the sea.
This volcano blew its top in some year BC. An earthquake in 1956 damaged the towns but they’ve recovered and they host a quadrillion tourists.
