Walked around in Central Cork. Went to the top of Shandon Tower at St Anne’s Church which isn’t far from my Airbnb. You’re allowed to ring the bells in the tower and there are instructions on how to play four tunes.
I tried “Morning Hath Broken” and “Edelweiss” but neither sounded right. Guess practice everyday is required.
Visited the English Market in the city center. There’s a great variety of foods to buy. The fish counter was interesting. Cork, one of the oldest cities in Ireland, is interesting to walk around in. I had low expectations but I’m glad I visited.
Cobh, pronounced “Cove”, is the port city of Cork and a lot of southern Ireland. It used to be called Queenstown but it was changed back to it’s Irish name when Ireland became independent in 1922. It was where six million Irish embarked for the US, Canada and other places.
Cobh, or Queenstown at the time, was the last port for the Titanic. If you had a bad feeling about the voyage this was your last chance to get off. I think one person did. There’s a museum here about the Titanic and its only voyage.
There’s also a Irish Heritage Center in Cobh. If you think you have relatives who emigrated from Ireland this might be where they boarded a ship and you can check in the center.
Cobh has a big cathedral on a hill. It overlooks the bay. Took the train from Cork this afternoon. It was a forty minute trip and cost 6.90 Euros or about $7.40 for a roundtrip ticket. Nice place to visit.
