July 8, 2024 – Iqaluit, Nunavut, Canada

Took Caribou Cab to Apex. Walked up the hill to a big concrete marker where there was a great view of Frobisher Bay. It was raining lightly but had to stand at the top and take it all in. Beautiful

Flagged down a taxi along the road for the return to Iqaluit. All taxi rides are $9 Canadian but I give the driver a 10 and get out. That’s only $7.33 US.

It’s fairly easy to get a taxi here. If you’re walking along the road between Apex and Iqaluit, for example, and a taxi goes by it’s not unusual for the taxi driver to slow down a little and look at you. Even if there’s already a passenger in the car, you can catch a ride. Thought about hitchhiking but never tried it.

There are few roads up here but there are plenty of cars. You probably can’t drive more than four miles from the center of Iqaluit except on one road that goes north to a mine.

Cheers

Afternoon

It’s raining lightly so talked a cab driver into taking me to the end of The Road to Nowhere.

Yes, there’s a road named that and it does go nowhere. It just ends after about 4km (2.5 miles).

There used to be signs for the road but they kept getting stolen.

The tundra has its own beauty and got to see more of it on the drive.

Also, the first ship of the year has arrived. It’s a tanker bringing in oil and gas. Cab driver said it probably had to follow a Coast Guard icebreaker in.

Cheers

So, what’s there to eat in Iqaluit? Arctic char, of course.  It’s The fish here. It’s related to salmon but tastes in between salmon and trout.

Lots of people fish for it here and the Inuit have fished for it in this area since time began. Try it if you can find it.

Cheers
