October 14, 2024 – Baku, Azerbaijan

Walked to Old Baku, the area where Baku began. It was enclosed by stone walls with several gates. Many of the buildings and tower required a ticket (bought there) to enter.

Then, walked up a long staircase to the Flame Towers. The three towers are lit up at night but they appear to be mostly empty. What a waste.

Baku is about 92 feet below sea level and is the largest city and port on the landlocked Caspian Sea. It’s the capital of Azerbaijan and is the lowest capital in the world.

Azerbaijan is a big oil producer and has been for ages. Oil was even brought out of the ground since ancient times in hand dug wells to light lamps.

Most of the oil these days is produced from offshore oil drilling platforms. You can see some in the distance like a mirage in the Caspian Sea.

Well, enjoy your day, night or whatever.

Cheers
