May 9, 2025 – Walked from Walton to Gilsland, England

Walked from Walton along Hadrian’s Wall Path to Gilsland, nine miles to the east. Saw a good bit of the Wall and vallum as well as the foundations of a fort and several turrets.

The vallum is the deep ditch that parallels the wall, another defensive feature. It’s about nine feet deep with sloping sides and flanked by berms built with the earth removed digging the vallum.

Yesterday, didn’t see anything except maybe a little of the vallum. Today felt like hitting the jackpot. Really cool to walk along the Wall.

And, the day was sunny and cool. Ideal for a walk.

The countryside on the first four miles reminded me of Tennessee near Lynchburg where they make Jack Daniels. That’s only about forty five miles from where I live.

Beautiful countryside with rolling green hills, patches of forest, and here and there along the pastures edges, big, gnarly oaks five feet in diameter.

And, dividing the land, nice, clear, rocky streams that look like they should be loaded with trout. Very pleasant day.

Cheers
