May 14, 2025 – York to Whitby, England

Took a couple of trains to Whitby on the North Sea coast, three hours from York.

This little town was where Captain James Cook, the great English explorer, apprenticed as a seaman. He was from Marton which isn’t far from here. Cook put a lot of Pacific Ocean lands on the map.

He was the first known European to visit Eastern Australia and Hawaii. He went up to Alaska, mapped Newfoundland’s coast and much more.

This little harbor town was also the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula. The ruined abbey on the imposing hill above the harbor was probably what set the mood in the novel.

Nice town even without vampires.

Cheers
