There are many things to do in Whitby. One is to visit the Captain James Cook Museum. It’s in the house by the harbor where Cook stayed as an apprentice seaman. Cook put a lot of places on the map in the late 1700s.
The ruins of the Whitby Abbey at the top of the hill are also well worth a visit.
Also, this town is known for jet, a black, mineral-like, kinda gemstone of the fossilized relative of the monkey puzzle tree from 300-200 million years ago. Okay, you’re lost. I get it.
Jet is used in jewelry and Queen Victoria in the 1800s wore it and made it pretty popular for awhile. The term jet black was born because jet is indeed very black in most cases.
I’ve learned a lot on this trip. I need to find a bar.
Cheers
