Dominica is known as the Nature Island in the Caribbean. It’s has nine volcanoes, multiple hot springs and waterfalls and cloaked in dense forests. It’s so rugged the colonial powers, Britain and France couldn’t make it productive as far as growing any crop like sugar cane.
But, that didn’t stop the two from fighting over it. Dominica’s location between Martinique and Guadeloupe made it a strategic island to hold.
In Roseau, Dominica’s largest city and the capital, a garrison was built at the top of the hill Morne Bruce by the French and then when Britain took the island, they took over the garrison and placed their own cannons on top of the hill to protect the bay.
Today, did a self guided walking tour of Roseau. Dominica isn’t as developed for tourists as most other islands. A few cruise ships come in, dock at Roseau, disgorge passengers into taxis and tour vehicles and then leave. As I understand it, excursions have to meet the ships schedule.
Cheers
