Dec 16, 2025 – Roseau to Douglas-Charles Airport, Dominica

The taxi driver I’ve used in Roseau drove me to the Douglas-Charles Airport on the other side (eastern) of the island this morning. It’s about an hour and forty minutes on twisting mountain roads. Today I leave to return to Miami. On the way Rene, the driver, added comments about the areas we drove through.

At one point we drove by a big construction project being built by the Chinese. I think it was some kind of quarry for their project or a dam. As we drove slowly through the site I saw a few Chinese workers in hard hats. They didn’t look happy and they didn’t look like they belonged on the island.

At another place farther along, Rene again slowed down as we approached a bus stop. He said the people in the area are Caribs, Indians who are indigenous to the island. Their ancestors fled from the British and French and hid in the mountains. So, there are still indigenous Indians in Dominica. I saw Indian faces at the bus stop. That’s cool.

Finally arrived at the airport and I had already checked in online but I found out at American Airlines desk that the flight would be delayed two hours. Delays have been the norm flying in the Caribbean. However, it turned out that this flight would have a total of four delays eventually departing four hours late.

I reached my accommodation in Miami around 10:30 PM. Another long, frustrating day of air travel in this region. Flew out of Miami and arrived home in Huntsville, AL around 2 PM the next day.

It was a good trip. Learned quite a bit about the islands I went to: Grenada, St Vincent and the Grenadines, St Lucia and Dominica. And, I enjoyed interacting with the locals. I never felt unsafe.

Cheers
