  • May 17, 2025 – Newcastle Upon-Tyne, England

Yesterday, returned to Newcastle by train from Whitby. Took about two and half hours. Today, my buddy, Lee, and I took the train south to Durham where there’s a massive cathedral. It was built starting in the 900s AD. So, it’s almost as old as dirt. Such a pleasure to visit it and the nice,…

There are many things to do in Whitby. One is to visit the Captain James Cook Museum. It’s in the house by the harbor where Cook stayed as an apprentice seaman. Cook put a lot of places on the map in the late 1700s. The ruins of the Whitby Abbey at the top of the…

  • May 14, 2025 – York to Whitby, England

Took a couple of trains to Whitby on the North Sea coast, three hours from York. This little town was where Captain James Cook, the great English explorer, apprenticed as a seaman. He was from Marton which isn’t far from here. Cook put a lot of Pacific Ocean lands on the map. He was the…

York Minster is a huge cathedral. It has grown over its 1400 year history. Walking inside is like going in a museum. I spent an hour and a half in there. Do yourself a favor and visit it if you’re in Northern England. Cheers

Never heard of Dutch pancakes until today in York. Looked like pizza but the underlying crust was a big crepe. Very good. They had reggae playing. Kind of a relaxing lilt to it. Cheers

  • May 12, 2025 – Chollerford to York, England

With my walk of the middle section of Hadrian’s Wall Path over, took the train from Hexham to York, a trip of an hour and a half. York’s history fills thick books. You’ve got Anglo Saxon, Norman, Viking and English threads of history here. But, the city was founded by the Romans in 71 AD.…

  • May 11, 2025 – Walked from Twice Brewed to Chollerford, England

Today was long and hard. Thirteen miles of walking on Hadrian’s Wall Path up and down ridges following the Wall. Could see the Wall miles ahead and stretching forever. But, finally made it to my end point for this walk at Chollerford in front of the Roman fort, Chesters. It was closing so didn’t get…

  • May 10, 2025 – Walked from Gilsland to Twice Brewed, England

Walked Hadrian’s Wall Path about twelve miles to Twice Brewed and another mile, at least, to my B&B. The miles weren’t easy as a lot were along an undulating ridge. One uphill section had stone steps. Thought I was back on the Inca Trail for that bit. There was a lot of Wall today. The…

  • May 9, 2025 – Gilsland, England

Dinner at Samson Inn, where I’m staying, was pretty good. Had haggis bon bons for a starter just to see what that would be like. Not bad at all. Then, salmon & prawn pasta which was good but could have eaten two bowls of it. Dessert of salty caramel pudding with vanilla ice cream was…

  • May 9, 2025 – Walked from Walton to Gilsland, England

Walked from Walton along Hadrian’s Wall Path to Gilsland, nine miles to the east. Saw a good bit of the Wall and vallum as well as the foundations of a fort and several turrets. The vallum is the deep ditch that parallels the wall, another defensive feature. It’s about nine feet deep with sloping sides…
