One of the highlights of Belfast is Titanic Belfast, a great museum devoted to the ship Titanic. You may have heard of it. It was built here.
There are lots of displays explaining the design, construction, working conditions of the ship builders, Belfast in the early 1900s, the voyage of the Titanic and the sinking after hitting an iceberg in the North Atlantic.
Everybody knows the story but this museum puts faces on it. You realize what went into the design, construction and how much the workers needed the wages. The museum makes it personal.
Do yourself a favor and visit this museum if you have a chance to come to Belfast.
I was in the museum over three hours. None of the items on display came from the bottom of the Atlantic where Titanic now rests. That’s considered a grave site.
There were items found by rescuers on the ocean surface on the night of the sinking and days that followed. A deck chair and life jacket were found floating and a pocket watch was found in the pocket of a floating victim.
