March 16, 2026 – Ouidah, Benin

West Africa was a source of many slaves to the Americas. In Ouideh, Benin a complex is being built to memorialize and tell the sad story of becoming a slave.

Slaves were branded like cattle, stored in a dungeon until a ship was ready and then packed onto the ship for a three month trip across the Atlantic. Many of the slaves died before even getting on the ship.

Some slaves jumped into the water in their shackles while being transported to the ship in small boats from the beach. They drowned. Some died in the dungeon from diseases spread easily in the crowded space.

Doesn’t seem like a lot of happy history here.

A votre sante.

Great day and evening in Ouidah
