Flew to St John’s, Newfoundland from Halifax. St John’s is a place I’ve wanted to visit for a long time. I want to see a lot of the island of Newfoundland but I won’t have time on this trip. I’ve got three days.
Historic Signal Hill in St John’s is a good walk from downtown and I’m staying in an Airbnb a mile from downtown. Cabot Tower is on top of the 548 ft hill. It was here in 1901 that Marconi received the first transatlantic radio transmission.
The hill was also the place where in the 1600’s a battery of cannons was placed by the Brits to protect the entrance to St John’s Harbor. The entrance is called The Narrows for good reason. The waterway is only a 200m wide channel cutting between two ridges over 500ft high.
Great view of the Atlantic from the top of Signal Hill and an excellent place to look for whales. Saw one.
Cheers
