September 18, 2026 – Nuuk to Qaqortok, Greenland

So, today flew a little over an hour south from Nuuk to Qaqortoq. Qaqortoq is in southern Greenland and there are a bunch of ruins from Viking settlements. Most sites are just foundations, I believe, but in a couple of days we’ll go see the remanents of the last Viking church used in Greenland. More on that in a few days.

Qaqortoq is a small town on an island. It’s population is just over 3000 and it’s the fourth largest town in Greenland. The economy is based on fishing, service and administration. A few cruise ships stop here and anchor outside the harbor where the water is deep enough.

It’s windy. The wind will almost knock you down and walking into it is like walking up a hill. And, speaking of hills you have walk up those too.

Lee and I are staying in a trade school that also accommodates tourists like us. The buildings surrounding this one are dilapidated with broken windows. This building, occupied by some students, some apparently trying to learn how to play the drums, doesn’t lack youthful exuberance. Good luck to us finding some quiet.

Well, Cheers
