September 26, 2026 – On the Arctic Umiaq ferry, Greenland

Still chugging north. We stopped at Sisimiut for two and half hours. We got off the ferry and wandered part of the town. Sisimiut is Greenland’s second largest town with about 5,500 people. It has been a settlement in Greenland for 4,500 years, probably established by the Saqqaq people. There are no signs of the Norse settling in this area. Europeans settled in the 1700s primarily to hunt whales by the Dutch and Danish. The Danish finally drove the Dutch out around 1739 in a series of battles.

Sisimiut is 200 miles (320 km) north of Nuuk. We’ve crossed the Arctic Circle getting here. Like in all of Greenland there are no roads connecting Sisimiut to any other town. And, using the word “town” in Greenland is a stretch except for the four largest towns in Greenland, Nuuk, Sisimiut, Iulissat, and Qaqortoq.

We had just enough time to see a few sites before reboarding the ferry.

Cheers
