September 27, 2026 – Ilulissat, Greenland

Arrived at Ilulisaat, the end of the ferry trip, after four days on board. We covered about 825 miles (1330 km).

The food was good, the room was comfortable and the scenery was outstanding. Taking the ferry is a great way to do Greenland the Greenlandic way because the ferry is mainly used by locals. There are few tourists like us onboard. Using the ferry is the secret to seeing a good part of western Greenland on a budget. Flying or taking a cruise is far more expensive.

Ilulisaat is on Disko Bay. The large bay is choked with icebergs calved from a few giant glaciers. Some of the icebergs are enormous and look like islands of ice.

We’re above the Arctic Circle and it’s colder here than Nuuk and points south, as you would expect.

Ilulisaat has about 5,100 people and about as many sled dogs and is Greenland’s third largest city after Nuuk and Sisimuit. Ilulisaat is a popular tourist town because of the Ilulisaat Icefiord which is a Unesco World Heritage site.

Stay warm and have a cold one. Cheers
