September 9, 2023 – Karakol, Issyk-Kul Region, Kyrgyzstan
Photos of the day include a visit to a Soviet sanatorium, a museum to the Russian explorer Pristan Przhevalsky, a stop at Issyk Kul, service in a Russian Orthodox Church, a visit to a Chinese mosque and a yurt building demo. Just an average day. Dinner tonight was at a Uyghur family’s house. Good food…

September 8, 2023 – Tamga, Ysyk-Kol, Kyrgyzstan
Moved downhill to a guesthouse near the southern shore of a great big lake, Issyk Kul. The lake is 50 miles wide and a hundred miles long and has a max depth of 2192 ft. It’s the seventh deepest lake in the world. It’s slightly salty and doesn’t freeze in the winter despite the cold…

September 7, 2023 – Song-Kul Lake, Kyrgyzstan
Out of touch yesterday because we drove high into the mountains to a beautiful mountain lake, Song-Kul. Stayed in a yurt. Lots of cows, horses, sheep, and some yaks in this grassland at about 9,900 ft.

September 5, 2023 — Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan
Arrived in Bishkek early this morning, checked in the hotel, took a long nap then hit the sidewalks. The stroll took me to the Osh Bazaar where almost everything is sold, even pig heads. All the people have Asian features. Makes sense since China is the neighbor to the east and Mongols controlled this area…

September 3, 2023 – Dubai, UAE
Took a taxi from Dubai to Sharjah, the city just north of Dubai. Wanted to see the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization. Want to learn more about Islam and what Islamic people have achieved. Like most good museums I left on information overload. And yet, I still don’t know enough. The taxi cost about $20…

September 1, 2023 – Dubai, UAE

Flew to Dubai today. It’s a hot and humid place even at night. Reminds me of Nicaragua in that regard. Found a shop near my little hotel that sold shawarma, a burito-like wrap. Very tasty. Cost 5 Emirati dirham or $1.36. The Dubai Airport is large, super clean and looks shiny and new. A lot…

May 28, 2023 – Back home from Ireland
It was a great trip to Ireland but there are still plenty of things to see and do there. The Irish are friendly, helpful and funny and it certainly helps to visit a country where English is spoken. The costs are reasonable and it’s fairly easy to get around. The photo is of a Friday…
